No one knows who will win the "Game of Thrones," but if we had our choice, one of the series' six leading women would be seated on the Iron Throne.
In case you needed an extra reminder that the new season starts this month, the women of "Game of Thrones" cover six different versions of this week's Entertainment Weekly. Daenerys, Cersei, Arya, Sansa, Margaery and Brienne pose powerfully on their covers, each promising that in Season 6 it's "women on top."
“The women are rocking this season -- and I’m not just saying that because they’re on your cover,” HBO programming president Michael Lombardo told the magazine.
“Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) always does, but also Brienne (Gwendoline Christie), Arya (Maisie Williams), Sansa (Sophie Turner), Cersei (Lena Headey), Margaery (Natalie Dormer), and other characters too, like Yara (Gemma Whelan). They power this season," he said. "It’s organic to the storytelling, yet a radical shift. It’s the women that are the hope that we’re watching as the chess pieces move this season, and it’s very exciting.”
As the article notes, the "Game of Thrones" universe started as a decidedly male one, with leaders like Eddard Stark, Khal Drogo and Tywin Lannister in command. Over the course of the series, however, many of these figures have fallen, as the female characters in the "GoT" universe have seized power.
