Powerful Documentary Investigates Prevalence Of Rape In Bangladesh

In a powerful new documentary, VICE News correspondent Tania Rashid investigates the prevalence of rape in Bangladesh.

Rashid met with perpetrators and victims of sexual violence in the country's Sylhet region of Bangladesh. A women's lawyer in the region told Rashid that gang rapes happen almost daily, but often go reported. "The victims are shunned and are told, 'No, don't speak out,'" Shipra Goswami told the VICE correspondent.

Even though rape is punishable by life imprisonment or death in Bangladesh, the Asian nation has troubling levels of sexual violence. More than half of the Bangladeshi men surveyed by the United Nations in 2013 admitted to having committed physical or sexual violence.
