Spiritual Author Gary Zukav On Why Even The Best Job Won't Bring You Happiness (VIDEO)

Why Your Career Will Never Completely Fulfill You

Keith, a 23-year-old economics student, is ready to start his career. Like many new grads, he's nervous about entering the working world and worried about choosing the right job.

"I have all of these friends that graduated and they have these nice jobs, and I call them a few months later and I'm like, 'How's life?'" Keith says in the above video. "And they're like, 'It sucks.' They're not happy with what they're doing."

While Keith is grateful for the job interviews he has lined up, he doesn't want to fall into the same trap as his friends. To help him do some soul-searching, Keith turns to spiritual teacher and co-founder of the Seat of the Soul Institute Gary Zukav on "Help Desk."

"How can I understand myself or better understand my soul to know if this job or career is worth pursuing, and if it will make me happy?" Keith asks.

Zukav explains to Keith that he is looking for happiness in the wrong place. "The answer doesn't lie in the job, the answer lies in you," he says.

"Try to hold this thought: The job isn't going to make you happy," Zukav continues. "It can be a job that's just delightful -- eventually, you're going to find parts of your personality are going to emerge that aren't happy."

Zukav says this is true of any job, even his own. "I love what I do. Absolutely love it," he says. "But I still have power struggles with my spiritual partner, Linda, because there are parts of my personality that come from fear."

To find true happiness, Zukav advises Keith to look within himself. "So I want to suggest this to you: That you're not a single personality," he says. "That your personality has different aspects to it. Some of them are joyful, some of them are healthy. You can start to cultivate the loving parts of your personality. Because when you start doing that, you won't be looking for the job to fulfill you."

"Help Desk" airs Sundays at noon ET on OWN.
