Gay Marriage In New York Gains In Approval With 58% Favoring

The percentage of New Yorkers who support gay marriage seems to be growing. A recent Quinnipiac poll found that 58% of those polled said they were in favor of legalizing gay marriage. 36% said they would oppose such a measure.

Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, said that while New Yorkers support marriage equality, it's just not a top priority. "New Yorkers support same-sex marriage," he said, "but their top priorities are the property tax cap and ethics reform."

When split along party lines, the poll found that 72% of Democrats supported gay marriage while only 34% of Republicans did.

There seems to be some legal momentum towards legalizing gay marriage. Last month Mayor Bloomberg, a staunch supporter of marriage equality and huge political contributor, threatened to stop donating to Republicans who didn't support the measure.

Gov. Cuomo has pledged to push for relevant legislation soon.
