Gay Voices' Family Friday: Meet Sara's Family

LGBT Family Fridays Spotlight: Meet Sara's Family

As part of our Family Friday series, every Friday, we spotlight one family, share the story of their love and send lots of love and support to them from our own huge family all over the world.

Since we've launched our Family Friday series, we've gotten so many beautiful submissions from you. You've shared your families and stories from your lives. We've been genuinely touched by your stories. Your families are beautiful. Thank you.

This week, we're spotlighting a small and growing family (their latest addition is fairly new not only to them, but the world!). Meet Sara, her wife Amanda, and baby Grady!

How did you meet?

We both teach math at the same high school, but we never really spoke until one Friday afternoon at a bar down the street from school. Amanda was a first-year teacher and she stayed at school a little late to do some work. I was already halfway through my second beer when I saw her walk in. I said to her, "Hey, you are tardy." She looked at me and said, "Who the hell are you?"

Tell us about your wedding. What state did you get married in? Did you have to leave the your residential state to do so?

We got married in Connecticut. We were planning on driving up there, getting married and then returning to PA for a party. It turned out that 80 of our closest friends and family followed us there and we had an amazingly fun wedding.

Has your extended family embraced your nuclear one?
Yes! My family has always been supportive. Amanda's family was iffy for a while, but they have come around. We all get along really well now and everyone has fallen in love with Grady, of course. We also have an absolutely amazing group of friends and colleagues who are more than supportive.

How will you explain anti-gay feelings to your son?
We will tell him that every family is different and that even though some people might be mean he will always be surrounded by people who love him unconditionally.

What's your favorite memory about your family? What makes you proudest of your family?

I'm proud of them for being smart and beautiful everyday. My partner's favorite memory is struggling through 21 hours of labor and then meeting Grady for the first time. My favorite memories are all of the times we spend laughing.

Tell us one thing you wish for the future with your family.
We hope that someday our marriage will have legal recognition in our state. Regardless, we wish that we remain happy, healthy and laughing together for a really long time.

REMINDER: If you'd like your own family featured on a Family Friday, please email us at gayvoices@huffingtonpost.com. Remember that family is what we make it, so if your family is you and the pack of LGBT folks who you'd go to the mats for, send them over. We want to see them, too.
