There are some preseason scuffles -- looking at you, Cam Newton -- and then there are moments that go nuclear, such as the drama the New York Jets have now found themselves in.
Jets quarterback Geno Smith is seriously injured, and will be missing some serious time, after being involved in a locker room altercation on Tuesday, reports Ben Shpigel of The New York Times.
Smith was punched in the face by second-year linebacker I.K. Enemkpali after he put his finger in Enemkpali's face during an argument, according to Fox Sports' Mike Garafola. Smith suffered a broken jaw and is now out at least six to ten weeks.
Jets head coach Todd Bowles told reporters on Tuesday that the team released Enemkpali after the incident, saying that Smith was "cold cocked" in a "childish" argument. The former first-round pick out of West Virginia will require surgery on his jaw, effectively ending the Jets' competition for their starting quarterback job.
Unless Smith miraculously recovers, Ryan Fitzpatrick is set to be the Jets' opening day quarterback.
