Former "Star Trek" actor and gay advocate George Takei made good on his promise to sit down for lunch with Donald Trump and discuss same-sex marriage.
Takei and Trump lunched together at the Trump Tower Grill in New York City on Tuesday, Towleroad reported. The conversation was not only "lively and engaging," but also included talk of same-sex marriage rights.
Takei took to his Facebook to elaborate:
Friends, I had lunch with Donald Trump today at the Trump Tower Grill. It was a lively and engaging hour-long conversation that touched upon his personal position on marriage equality. He confided that he recently attended a same-sex wedding and that he'd found it "beautiful."
I remarked that NY is now a marriage-equality state, and that after all, marriage is better for business! Minds are changing across America, and I am always ready to speak to those ready to listen. I hope that my chat with The Don might have some effect on his stance on the subject.
Back in March, Takei vowed to talk to Trump about same-sex marriage rights in America, the New York Daily News reported. That month, while speaking to the Des Moines Register, Trump said he did not support gay marriage or civil benefits.
“I’m looking forward to the lunch," Takei told the Daily News at the time. "I really was serious. I think Mr. Trump is a decent, fair-minded guy, and I think we can have a very good discussion." Adding, "I want to listen to his views and respond specifically to his concerns. The sense I get in my bones is that he’s a decent, sophisticated guy. I’m sure he knows many people who are gay or lesbian. My position is that the core of any good marriage is love and commitment.”
In May, Trump furthered his anti gay-marriage beliefs by comparing the union to golf putters in a New York Times profile, saying: "It’s like in golf. A lot of people — I don’t want this to sound trivial — but a lot of people are switching to these really long putters, very unattractive. It’s weird. You see these great players with these really long putters, because they can’t sink three-footers anymore. And, I hate it. I am a traditionalist. I have so many fabulous friends who happen to be gay, but I am a traditionalist."
Takei, famous for playing Hikaru Sulu in the "Star Trek" television series, came out in 2005. In September 2008, he married his longtime partner, Brad Altman.
