On this day in 1984, Geraldine Ferraro made history when she became the first woman to be nominated to a major party's vice-presidential ticket post.

Ferraro accepted the opportunity to run alongside Democratic presidential candidate Walter Mondale, who in November 1984 lost his bid to incumbent Republican Ronald Reagan.

In an interview with AOL-PBS Makers filmed before her death in March 2011, Ferraro reflected back on the experience,

"I look back and I think, it did make a difference," Ferraro said. "We pulled down the sign from the door of the White House that says "'male only.'"
