Gerda Steiner & Jorg Lenzlinger Deliver A Synthesized Environment (PHOTOS)

PHOTOS: Artists Expand Your Mind

Gerda Steiner and Jorg Lenzlinger are known for their site-specific installations that invite the viewer to be integrated into the work. Their expansive and awe-inspiring displays take full advantage of the surroundings and immerse the viewer in a realm of cohabitating opposites.

Their work focuses on a theoretical evolution of nature, one in which all aspects of life and matter complement each other without question, allowing for an exploration beyond the physical realm. "Power Sources," at the Art Tower Mito in Japan, is their biggest exhibition to date, incorporating Steiner and Lenzlinger's cacophonous maelstrom of objects and ideas into the formal landscape.

Entangled webs of chords and wires become engulfed by a mysterious crystal-like formation while curious fungi emerge from a pool of black motor oil. Despite the opposing materials, Steiner and Lenzlinger's assemblages never allow juxtaposition to cross one's mind. The materials feel natural together through the duo's careful and meticulous installation.

The fact that the materials don't feel shoved together like some disingenuous family portrait is more impressive given that viewers are literally invited into the work. Benches, couches and other seating options situate participants in the work, to experience and dissect it at their own discretion; the humble goal being to recreate the imagination so the viewer can expand upon their own dreams.

"Power Sources" will be on display at the Art Tower Mito from February 11th to May 6th, 2012. View a slideshow of the work below.
