Gery Chico: Chicago's Soldier Field Should Host Super Bowl In 2015

Chicago Bears fans may not be able to watch their team play in the Super Bowl this year, but mayoral candidate Gery Chico hopes that the city can get in on the action--whether the Bears make the playoffs or not.

If elected mayor, Chico said he would try getting Soldier Field Super Bowl-ready by 2015, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

"As a concept, we should get into it and look at it, because Chicago deserves to be a Super Bowl city," Chico said, adding that the game would bring jobs and millions of dollars in revenue to the city.

Chicago has not been able to host the big game because the NFL requires a stadium to have 70,000 seats for the game, WGN News reports. Soldier Field has 61,500 seats, the fewest in the league.

In awarding the 2014 Super Bowl to New York, the NFL suspected a rule that required a 50-degree temperature or dome field for the big game.

"If New York can do it, Chicago can do it," Chico said.

Chico trails Rahm Emanuel in the race for Chicago mayor, but said he would work with the Chicago Park District and the Bears to add the seats if elected.
