Getting Into College Is Easier Than You Think

If you're shooting for an Ivy League school, the admission rates are dispiriting; last year, Stanford admitted only 5% of applicants, Harvard and Yale admitted 6%, and Columbia admitted 7%. As I explained recently, however, these numbers do not tell the whole story.

Reading the news, you would think that getting into a good college gets more difficult every year. If you're shooting for an Ivy League school, the admission rates are dispiriting; last year, Stanford admitted only 5% of applicants, Harvard and Yale admitted 6%, and Columbia admitted 7%. As I explained recently, however, these numbers do not tell the whole story. In fact, getting into a selective college today is easier than it was 30 years ago. Here's why:
