GIF Art: Matthew DiVito, AKA 'Mr. Div', Creates Mesmerizing Digital Shapes

This fall, Tumblr hosted an open call for GIFs. After submissions poured in, Paddle 8, an online arts auction house, curated the first GIF art festival: "Moving the Still." This week, the first Vine was sold for $200. At this point in history, there is clearly something attractive about a few seconds of a digital image repeated infinitely.

The GIFS by Matthew DiVito (a.k.a. Mr. Div) are no exception. You can certainly get lost in the amorphous, glowing shapes on the artist's Tumblr. According to Colossal, the motion graphics designer is reportedly one of the most popular GIF artists working today.

"While there is certainly a retro quality to my work, my real goal is to create very modern looking designs, but using retro aesthetics to add a little more depth and character to the final product," wrote DiVito in an email to The Huffington Post. "Beyond that, creating GIFs has been a great outlet for me to learn and grow as a designer, something I hope I can continue doing for a long time to come."
