Gillian Anderson Says Women Need To Stop Feeling Ashamed Of This

Gillian Anderson insists she hasn't had any work done, but says she's no stranger to the pressure women in Hollywood feel to keep turning back the clock.

The 47-year-old "X-Files" actress appears on People's "World's Most Beautiful Faces Of The Year" list and admits she sometimes succumbs to the standards society and media place on women to stay young.

"I notice my own opinions about changes that are happening on my body and face, and the feelings that come up as a result of that," Anderson told People.

She says she feels "strongly" that she won't have plastic surgery, but says she won't rule it out completely. "I know that I am a vain woman," Anderson said. "But also, at this juncture, I just hope that I would be able to embrace these stages of my aging face, and not feel like something was wrong and that it needed to be fixed through surgery."

Accepting aging is made more difficult because of societal pressure, Anderson says. There's evidence of that everywhere. Just earlier this week we wrote about a viral Facebook post from a middle-aged woman who was pressured by a salesman to buy anti-aging products, who went as far as to say she might need surgery upon reaching age 50.

As for Anderson, she says it's time for a shift in our perspective.

"It's sad that in general there's shame around [aging]," she said. "I think if we shifted our perception, and embraced the natural aging process as something that was celebrated rather than shamed and made taboo, women would respond to it differently."
