What started as a sporting competition in 1891 bringing together the member states of British Empire, the first official games was held 39 years latter in 1930 under the name Empire Games in Hamilton, Ontario. They have been called the Commonwealth Games since 1978.What started off with 4-5 sports has now 17 sports on offer. The Commonwealth Games takes place every 4 years. The last Commonwealth was held in Delhi in 2010.While Delhi had Archery and Tennis among the various sports, Scotland has Triathlon and Judo in place of these 2 sports as they are more popular in Scotland.The Queen's Baton Relay is a much-loved tradition of the Commonwealth Games,which will start on 9th Oct 2013 at Buckingham Palace and will then depart to India and will travel more than hundred thousand miles visiting all 71 nations and finally ending the celebration at the ultimate destination - The Opening Ceremony At Glasgow.
My recent visit to Scotland "One Year To Go Commonwealth Games" event in July opened my eyes to the side of Scotland I never knew before. The city was lit with sparkle in everyone's eyes, the enthusiasm reflecting from the music on the streets to their actions on road. I also got a chance to meet the cute and green Clyde "The official Commonwealth Games Mascot". Glasgow 2014 will be celebrated in much larger scale across the city it will definitely be a live carnival of sorts.
