From the beginning, FOX's hit show, “Glee” has embraced Latinos and Latino culture. The show’s first season, which premiered in May of 2009, told the story of Will Schuester, a high school Spanish teacher (yes, Español!), who becomes the director of the high school Glee club, hoping to restore it to its former glory. Season 1 also introduced us to half-Puerto Rican actress Naya Rivera as the saucy and selfish cheerio Santana Lopez.
Now in its third season, “Glee” has become even more committed to telling stories about Latinos. Naya Rivera, who in season 1 was a recurring guest star who was seldom seen on-screen (and never got the chance to sing), has become one of the show's biggest stars—(she now gets all of the best solos!)!
"Glee" has also continued its commitment to featuring the Spanish language on-screen (A-listers Ricky Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow have both guest starred as Spanish teachers), and the show has featured several Spanish-language songs, including "La Isla Bonita" a Spanglish version of the Elvis classic "A Little Less Conversation," and a half-spanish cover of LMFAO's ubiquitous "Sexy and I Know It."
