Leaked Images Show Frightening New Godzilla Design For 'Resurgence'

The King of the Monsters looks scarred and bloodied.

Godzilla will be back in this summer's "Godzilla: Resurgence," and it looks like he's had an extreme makeover.

The King of the Monsters will make his first appearance in a Japanese film since 2004's "Godzilla: Final Wars," and images leaked online show what appears to be a frightening new form:

August Ragone, author of "Eiji Tsuburaya: Master of Monsters," confirmed on his website that the images were real and snapped at Toho Studios.

Toho has made all 28 Japanese Godzilla films and is producing the new one, which is being called "Shin Gojira" in Japanese and "Godzilla: Resurgence" in English.

While some of the Godzilla designs over the years have had a more friendly look, this is definitely not one of them, showing a scarred and bloodied monster.

Multiple reports suggest this Godzilla is much bigger than the typical design used in Toho films. In the past, the creature has often required just a single person inside a "Godzilla suit," but this one may be more of a puppet.

In addition, Godzilla may not be quite this ugly throughout the whole film:

After being off the big screen for more than a decade, Godzilla has been keeping busy since the blockbuster 2014 U.S. film. In addition to the Toho production scheduled for release on July 29, he will also star in a sequel to the U.S. movie, set for release in 2018.

Another U.S. film in production will see Godzilla battle King Kong. That movie is scheduled for a 2020 release.
