A stroll through the entirety of Golden Gate Park will always be one of the best excursions to take out-of-towners on. The Conservatory of Flowers, AIDS Memorial Grove, Stow Lake, and a little deeper in...are those real bison?
In a nod to our Wild West roots, bison have roamed in the park's Buffalo Paddock since the late 1800s. The mammoth creatures call the area next to Spreckels Lake home, delighting tourists and locals alike.
And now, thanks to a little help from the San Francisco Zoo, the park's bison family just got a little bit larger. On Tuesday, the city celebrated the arrival of seven bison calves to the paddock. "The bison at Golden Gate Park are a historic and celebrated treasure in San Francisco," Mayor Ed Lee said. "We welcome the new bison herd to their new home, and I know they will continue to delight residents and visitors using our world class Golden Gate Park."
Want to join in on the fun? The San Francisco Parks Department launched a naming contest in conjunction with the birth of our new furry friends. Anyone can submit baby names here, and the general public will have a chance to vote on the finalists before the to-be-determined Welcome Ceremony.
The babies are currently quarantined, but you can take a look at a video of their arrival below. Be sure to stop by the Buffalo Paddock on the next sunny afternoon for a chance to catch them in person.
