Does such a thing really exist?

The more I learn and the more I grow, the more I want to always see the good in people -- the happiness, the joy, and the strengths. Unfortunately, what I'm finding, is that the more I grow, the more I see the same ugly characteristics I thought would be banished after grade school. I will sooner jump to pick apart my own qualities (and others'!), before I will actually reflect upon all of the inherently good and redeeming things happening all around me. Negativity breeds negativity and we're all guilty of it.

Several weeks ago, some friends and I were talking about gossip and how just the sheer connotation of the word brings about negativity. We were talking about it in regards to social networks -- blogs, Facebook, Twitter, etc. -- and how it is far easier for someone to be mean sitting behind a computer screen than in real life. The same holds true for gossip! The protection of a digital screen, for whatever reason, acts as a shield for some to spew hatred and disapproval without remorse or conscience. For some, a digital alias is all that is necessary to grow the "confidence" they need to tear others down. It's sad and it's scary.

Collectively, we challenged ourselves to work on being less judgmental and focus more on what drives us toward a more upbeat outlook. Nearly one month in, the optimistic perspective I have is refreshing and I've found it incredibly rewarding. It's no longer a challenge, but a lifestyle.

This holiday season, I challenge you to make it a point to give back to yourself and others, to see the positive in as many people and situations as possible and, most importantly, to spread good words, instead of ugly ones.
