It is easier than ever to succumb to fear these days. Turn on the news or read the headlines in the newspaper about foreclosures, job loss reports, credit crisis, car dealership closings, 401K's gone, shuttered businesses, bankrupt states, corporate layoffs -lately fear is owning too much of the day. This has all the ingredients of a Stephen King white knuckled really, scary novel where the perilous economy descends into a debilitating culture of fear. Is there a benefit of continuously fanning the flames of fear? Wouldn't it be more beneficial for us all to take a news break and go out for a decompressing, anxiety free walk? Disconnecting from fear and reconnecting to our own power is how we will survive this economic episode.

There is a lesson that the proverbial beach ball teaches us with all its colored panels. Imagine that you are staring at just the red panel close up right in front of your eyes and

overwhelm our perception, to the point where we lose sight that we always have the power to consider other options. Now no one is suggesting that we downplay, sugar coat, or play a Pollyanna about the current economic state of affairs. It's really tough out there and depending on where you live, it may be even bordering on grim. While there are some signs of relief on the horizon, it is probably too soon to predict when everything will turn around. Odds are that we will still see challenging days ahead, before the economy stabilizes to the point where we can collectively sigh in relief. In this troublesome time there lies a real opportunity to learn self-preservation tactics to get us through these days and to use for the rest of our lives.

We have to decide what is going to have the upper hand. Fear as a force, or the power of life affirming trust and hope? We can chose to live day in, day out, totally overwhelmed by fear, in which case we are not seeing all the other potentials and are weakening our chances for a better tomorrow. Or, we can live in trust and learn to be open to the idea of change. The latter being a much more powerful way to navigate around obstacles and debunk fear. In his book Power VS. Force David Hawkins, M.D.,Ph.D speaks about true power. "Power is associated with that which supports the significance of life itself, it appeals to what uplifts, dignifies, and ennobles. Force must always be justified, whereas power requires no justification." Force is associated with the partial; power with the whole. Fear is not the whole truth; it is only a partial truth. Our power is in the whole of who we are.
