While kids apparently aren't asking their grandparents for help and guidance that much these days, their parents sure are -- especially when it comes to childcare.
A majority of grandparents provide childcare for their grandchildren. Of course this isn't a recent development: A 2012 University of Chicago study found that 61 percent of grandparents -- for at least one year between 1998 and 2008 -- watched their grandchildren for 50 hours a year. Seventy-four percent of grandparents provide care on a "regular basis," with almost one-third saying they do so five or more times a week, according to a 2012 MetLife Mature Market Institute and Generations United study.
With patchwork employment and childcare costs so high -- surpassing the average income of a two-parent family by 10 percent in 40 states and the District of Columbia -- it's got to be helpful to have grandparents step in and watch the kids for the day or a few hours in the evening (even if it can cause some tension).
It got us wondering: Should grandparents be paid to babysit? We asked Huff/Post50 Facebook fans what they thought.
"Yes. They deserve something extra for helping out," wrote Melissa McCloskey. "It doesnt have to be huge, but it should be something..."
LisaCee Cox completely disagreed. "You are going to take money from your kids??" she wrote. "Not unless, you really need the help financially, geez..."
