Gratitude for John Lennon and the Assignment

John Lennon once said: "When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down 'happy.' They told me I didn't understand the assignment, and I told them they didn't understand life."

I love this story because it reveals that Lennon, the upstart, was an independent thinker from day one, forcing his teachers to think twice about the point of life.

Frankly, we can all use that reminder because we, as a culture, can lose sight of it. We too often chase life. We get lost in the endless pursuit of materialism and the cycle it creates -- earn more, spend more, earn more, spend more.

Tell the truth. When you wake up every morning and rush off to work with your ever-expanding to do list, do you regularly remind yourself that happiness is the key to life ... or do you chase life?
