Alfonso Cuaron's last film was the 2006 film "Children Of Men." Seven years later, the director has returned with a project even more ambitious than that cult masterpiece of dystopian fiction: "Gravity," a two-hander set in space with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in starring roles. To quote Clooney's astronaut in the brand-new "Gravity" trailer: "Beautiful, don't you think?"
"Gravity," of course, didn't get made overnight. Cuaron was working on the film back in 2010, first with Robert Downey Jr. and Angelina Jolie eyed for the leading roles. Jolie turned the project down, however, in September of that year, and rumors quickly surfaced that Natalie Portman would replace her. Portman, too, decided against making "Gravity," leaving the part to Bullock. As Deadline.com noted when Jolie backed out, the lead actress in "Gravity" has a role akin to Tom Hanks' part in "Cast Away"; she's onscreen by herself for a majority of the film, something the new "Gravity" trailer teases out. Downey, meanwhile, was forced to leave the film in October of 2010 because of scheduling conflicts. Clooney stepped in for him in December of that year.
Fans of Cuaron's dexterous camera work in "Children of Men" probably won't be disappointed with "Gravity"; the film's opening scene is an uninterrupted 17-minute sequence. According to Clooney, "Gravity" is "more like '2001' than an action film."
"It is a very odd film, really," he told USA Today in 2011. "Two people in space. No monsters."
Warner Bros. was set to release "Gravity" on Nov. 21 of last year, but the studio moved the film to October of this year. "Gravity" will now arrive on Oct. 4. Watch the new "Gravity" trailer above; the official synopsis is below:
