"Great Expectations" is all the rage in TV this development season. Both ABC and The CW have ordered modern day takes on the classic tale.

Deadline.com reports ABC is developing "Legacy," a modern-day "sexy soap" twist on Charles Dickens' acclaimed work. Debra Martin Chase will executive produce the project, written by Jeremy Anderson and Patrick Moss.

Reese Witherspoon is behind The CW's take on "Great Expectations." According to The Hollywood Reporter, The CW has ordered a script of "Expectations." The modern-day story follows a young girl with dreams of making it big in the city. However, her San Francisco life isn't what she had hoped and dreamed until an anonymous benefactor enters the picture. Mills Goodloe will write and executive produce the project with Witherspoon executive producing.

ABC and The CW found themselves in a similar situation last development season. Both networks ordered shows based on "Beauty and the Beast." ABC's series was more in the vein of classic fairytale whereas The CW's -- which was ordered to series -- is a reboot of the '80s procedural series starring Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman.
