James Corden Hits All The Right Notes In Sainsbury’s 'Greatest Gift' Christmas Commercial

UK supermarket chain kicks off the holiday ad season with a winner.

Just 39 shopping days left until Christmas, so naturally, holiday-themed commercials are starting to take over the airwaves. And this ad by U.K. supermarket chain Sainsbury’s is an early contender for the best of the season.

The spot features Dave, a husband and father who wants to give his family the greatest gift: more of himself. Dave cooks up a plan to do just that in this animated clip, set to the tune “The Greatest Gift” written by Flight of the Concords star Bret McKenzie and sung by James Corden, host of the “Late Late Show” and its mega-viral “Carpool Karaoke” segments.

The ad is being praised for its inclusiveness, with depictions that include a mixed-race family, a same-sex couple, a single father and people from different cultures. But not everyone is thrilled with the campaign. Some Sainsbury’s workers are complaining that their long hours mean they can’t give that “greatest gift” to their own families during the holidays.
