Two large universities on the West Coast are attempting to reign in Greek life after alcohol-related injuries at recent parties hosted by fraternities.
Sigma Alpha Epsilon at the University of Southern California was suspended by the school following the serious injury of a visiting student from Loyola Marymount University, who fell from a DJ table at the fraternity's party on Thursday.
SAE did not register their party with the university and Los Angeles Fire Department as policy requires, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Many of the other fraternities and sororities at USC are voluntarily postponing their social events, Neon Tommy reports, after seven other students were sent to the hospital for alcohol consumption over the weekend. An average of four students are sent from "The Row" to area hospitals every weekend for alcohol intoxication, according to the Daily Trojan.
USC sent an email to Greek houses Monday imposing new sanctions, including banning parties on school nights and requiring a school ID for entrance to every social event. That means no Halloween parties this year, KTLA notes, since the holiday falls on a Thursday this year.
To the north, all of Greek life at the University of Oregon is on "social probation" for two weeks while the school investigates an unofficial Fraternity and Sorority Life function from last week, the Daily Emerald reports. Alcohol was allegedly provided to minors, and five female students were sent to the hospital for drinking too much, but were in stable condition as of Friday.
Chi Omega President Sarah Pierce chastised her members in an email, quoted by the Emerald: "While all chapters were irresponsible, we were especially out of control, and that is known by almost all of Greek Life."
