Green Tips For Your Dog: Reduce Your Pet's Carbon Pawprint

Green Tips To Reduce Your Dog's Carbon Pawprint

In recent years, many of us have become increasingly focused on reducing our environmental impact and boosting conservation efforts. But in trying to reduce our own carbon footprint, we often forget about our pets.

ABC News reported a few years ago that two New Zealand scientists wrote a book alleging "pets have a carbon footprint that is about twice the size of ... gas guzzling [SUVs]."

The Daily Green, however, responded, "If we want to do something to help reverse climate change, we should be worrying much more about the amount of meat that we ourselves are eating -- and the amount of cereals we are growing to feed food animals -- than blaming house pets for a problem that we created."

Several years ago, Christie Keith discussed the environmental impacts of pet ownership. She wrote, "If you're a consumer who is concerned about the impact of factory farming on the environment ... the source of the meat products in your pet's food deserves as much scrutiny as the source in your own."

Below, Heidi Ganahl, CEO and Founder of Camp Bow Wow, presents several tips to help you reduce your pet's environmental impact and waste less when it comes to pet care.
