Gregory Breeden, a Missouri man suspected in the mid-1990s of killing seven women, has been found dead in a Butler motel, authorities said.
Breeden's body was found in a motel room he rented by Butler Police Department officers who were summoned to check on the 67-year-old on Wednesday, according to WDAF.
"Upon arrival, officers found a white male identified as Gregory Breeden laying on the floor," the police department said in a press release. "It appeared that Mr. Breeden had been dead for several days."
An autopsy revealed Breeden died of natural causes, the Kansas City Star reported.
The former stock clerk for the Kansas City Public Works Department was charged in 1996 with murdering Viola McCoy. The 36-year-old woman's mutilated body was found in the Missouri River in September 1994, the Associated Press reported.
Police said McCoy's slaying was similar to that of six other women, most of them known prostitutes whose bodies were dumped in the Missouri River between August 1986 and September 1994.
Breeden denied involvement in the slayings and in 1999 the prosecution dropped the murder charge against him when a key witness stopped cooperating.
The rest of his life was spent in and out of prison.
He served a 10-year sentence for writing bad checks and was arrested in 2002, for soliciting prostitutes in Kansas City.
His most recent run-in with the law occurred in October 2013, when he was charged with sexual misconduct for allegedly urinating in public. That case was still making its way through court at the time of his death.
The murders of McCoy, Annette Parker, Melody Milliner, Linda Dennis, Kimberly Rash, Rhonda Dennis and Beverlie Tracy remain unsolved.
