'Gremlins' Remake Becomes Official, With 'Dark Shadows' Scribe Seth Grahame-Smith Set To Produce

'Gremlins' Remake Gets Green Light

It looks there will be some midnight feeding going on over the next few months, as the long-rumored "Gremlins" remake could finally happen.

Warner Bros., which distributed the 1984 original, will apparently proceed with its plans to reboot the horror-comedy classic, this according to horror-movie news site Bloody Disgusting.

Seth Grahame-Smith, king of modern horror comedy, is attached to produce the effort with David Katzenberg. "Gremlins" won't mark the first time the duo has worked together, as they are the creators of the MTV comedy "The Hard Times of RJ Burger." Grahame-Smith made his first foray into film last year after penning the scripts for Tim Burton's "Dark Shadows" update and the movie version of his novel "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter." He has also found fame with his satirical best-seller "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," which was recently resurrected for a big-screen adaptation with Lily Collins in a starring role. (Burt Steers will direct.)

There's no word yet on whether Grahame-Smith will also write the script, nor has Warner Bros. revealed who will direct or star in the movie. The studio has not officially confirmed the Bloody Disgusting report.

The original "Gremlins" boasted an all-star creative team -- directed by Joe Dante, written by Chris Columbus and produced by Steven Spielberg -- and was a commercial success, spawning a vast merchandising campaign using its memorable characters. It was one of two movies, along with "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," to influence the Motion Picture Association of America to add a PG-13 rating to its system in order to satisfy movies that were too tame for R ratings but too explicit for PG.

Whether "Gremlins" nostalgia is tangible enough to produce a smash hit has yet to be determined. "Grelins 2: The New Batch" hit theaters in 1990 to a decidedly tepid response, becoming only the 31st highest-grossing release of the year.
