On last week's episode of "Grey's Anatomy" (Thursdays at 9 p.m. EST on ABC), fans were shocked to hear Owen ask Cristina for divorce. But the actors behind the characters are confident this is not the end of Seattle Grace's most messed up couple.
"It's Owen being honorable and doing the hero thing falling on his own sword to save everybody else but I don't think [Cristina and Owen] are done at all," Kevin McKidd told The Hollywood Reporter about Owen's reasoning. In the episode, Owen, the chief of surgery, decided to divorce his estranged wife because of the plane crash lawsuit that puts him in a difficult position with Cristina (Sandra Oh) being a victim of the crash and thus, one of the plaintiffs.
"They've done a lot of damage to each other over the years but they don't want [to divorce]; they love each other," he added.
Earlier in last week's episode, Cristina told Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) that she wanted Owen back, but in her shocked state, she agreed to the divorce when he asked. "When he first asks for the divorce, obviously she doesn't know it's because of the lawsuit," Oh told THR.
But it won't last for long. According to Oh, Cristina and Owen will talk things over around Christmastime and "they realize that maybe being divorced is an opportunity as opposed to an ending," McKidd said. "They're very complicated and messed up but they're kind of made for each other ... They can't stay away from each other for too long."
Pompeo told HuffPost TV that Cristina and Meredith's arguably unhealthy friendship will take a backseat to the situation with Owen. "I think that Cristina's gotta work on her relationship with Owen," Pompeo said. "She's gotta find her way back to him and deal with that."
