Guess The Artist Answer Revealed: Jean-Honoré Fragonard (PHOTOS)

Guess The Artist: Answer Revealed!

Yesterday we showed this artwork and asked you to guess the artist. So far we're seeing a pattern in this series, as again only one third of you correctly guessed Jean-Honoré Fragonard.

Fragonard (1732-1806) was a French painter and printmaker. He was a student of Jean-Siméon Chardin and later worked for François Boucher's studio. Although the beginning of his career was focused on history painting, Fragonard is best known for his genre paintings, such as The Swing. His most famous work, The Swing, epitomizes French Rococo painting with it's pastel color palette, light-hearted tone, sumptuous detail and covert eroticism.

In a similar vein, Le Verrou (The Bolt) is a genre scene of two lovers in a bedroom. The female's legs extending to the left and the male's arm reaching up to the right to lock the door create a dynamic diagonal composition. Further adding to the drama is the stage-like setting of the scene with the curtain to the left, the dramatic spotlighting of the figures, and the shallow picture plane.
