Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff made history on Tuesday when it was announced that they will be the first female co-anchors of an evening news broadcast. They shared their reactions to the announcement in a post published by Ifill on Friday.
In it, both of them acknowledged the historic nature of the news, but also downplayed it a bit. Ifill insisted, "[Our] intent this time was not to make history. It was to continue to make a good news program. Still, I have been taken aback -– and gratified -– by the response of so many to our new roles."
At the TCA press tour on Tuesday, she told reporters that she and Woodruff were "both really proud" of their appointment.
Woodruff expressed a similar sentiment on Tuesday. "Clearly, women have come a long way in journalism and in television news, and this is one more barrier that's been broken down," she said. "So we celebrate that, but now it's time to get to work." Click over to PBS for the full post.
Their new roles will start in September. They were previously senior correspondents of "NewsHour," and have been taking turns co-anchoring the program along with the show's other senior correspondents. Earlier, Ifill had said that the true breakthrough would be when it is no longer historic for there to be two females co-hosting news coverage.
