Gwen Stefani Says Gavin Rossdale Split Was 'Unexpected'

Gwen Stefani might have an exciting new romance with Blake Shelton brewing, but she's still dealing with the aftermath of her very public divorce to husband of 13 years, Gavin Rossdale.

The "No Doubt" singer sat down for an interview with KIIS FM's JoJo Wright on Monday and opened up about the end of her marriage and the inspiration for her new song "Used to Love You."

"I had been writing because my life blew up," she told the radio host. "Everybody knows that my life blew up last February. I'd just been dealing with that. Unexpected. I was going along, thinking that was going to be the rest of my life, and it's not. I don't know what happened."

Stefani recalled one night that served as the catalyst for the divorce and the impact it had on her songwriting process.

"There was one night, the epicenter of the whole thing -- that's the most I can say about that -- and the next day I wrote the chorus to 'Used to Love You,'" "The Voice" coach added. "But I didn't know it was 'Used to Love You.' I just had written all this stuff and it had happened to be in there buried in a bunch of lyrics that I had written."

Stefani has been rather candid about her split with Rossdale and told Carson Daly last week that her life is "so extreme right now," but she has enjoyed returning to "The Voice" (with beau Blake Shelton), entering a new phase and working on her music.

However, it turns out that music isn't the only thing occupying her time as of late. Some women post-divorce join a book club or Zumba class. Stefani? She launches a clothing line for dogs.

To each their own.
