Each Spring the American Art Awards board selects the 25 Best Galleries And Museums In America.
American Art Awards: "We consider thousands of the most established art venues from across the nation. This year we awarded several museums with historical significance of 100+ years, some with over 100,000 annual visitors, some specializing in American acquisitions and others foreign antiquities. We've also selected some of the most reputable art galleries which specialize in contemporary works. In addition, we chose a few art facilities and centers dedicated to exhibiting the struggle and triumph of minorities and making an impact on their communities with inspiring educational programs."
HighlightHollywood.com reports: "The impressive AAA board chooses only one museum or gallery per state per year. Their selections are based on years established, industry reputation, online buzz, location, size, socially relevant exhibits, motivational and educational programs, represented artists as well as artist, client and visitor references."
Why did the American Art Awards select Haan Mansion Museum Of Indiana Art as Best Gallery Or Museum In Indiana this year?
American Art Awards: "This Lafayette Art Museum features T. C. Steele and holds the most extensive Indiana art collection in the US, including paintings from the Hoosier Group and Brown County Art Colony. Specializing in major oils, over100 artists are represented. Haan is a true find; a rare hospitable time-capsule cradling a precious past. The American Art Awards names Haan Museum Mansion of Indiana Art the Best Gallery Or Museum in Indiana, and one of our 25 Best Galleries And Museums In America, 2017."
THE HOOSIER GROUP AND BROWN COUNTY ART COLONY: The Hoosier Group is a designation given to five artists in 1894 at an exhibition in Chicago. Steele, Adams, Forsyth, Stark, and Gruelle comprise this most important group of Indiana artists, and they are the most represented artists on display in the mansion. The second important group are the members of the Brown County Art Colony. Starting in 1907, many artists came to Nashville, Indiana, to paint for the season or establish permanent residences. The best of these artists are Ada and Adolph Shulz, Will Vawter, Edward K Williams, Lucie Hartrath, and Adam Emory Albright. T. C. Steele's move to Brown County in 1907 helped establish the colony, but he was 60 at the time and did not integrate into the art scene like the other artists.
ART IN THE MANSION MUSEUM: Bundy and Eggemeyer from Richmond, pioneer painters Hays and Cox, and regionalist painters Davis and Floyd Hopper are also on display. The best Indiana art and ceramics anywhere are featured in this mansion moved from the 1904 St Louis World's Fair and furnished with massive American furniture. Haan proudly loans many paintings to other museums; 2016 was Indiana’s Bicentennial, and they loaned works to the Indiana State Museum (for two different exhibitions), the Indiana Historical Society, and the Richmond Art Museum. The Fort Wayne Museum of Art borrowed 57 paintings for an bicentennial exhibit.
SCULPTURES IN THE GARDEN: The museum added 24 sculptures to the garden for the Bicentennial Legacy Project completed in October 2016. The bronzes shown were made by Tuck Langland, who made major bronzes for the Federal Reserve and many other major institutions around the world. Other garden art are metal sculptures by Greg Mendez, works in clay by several artists including Marvin Bartel and Bill Kremer, amazing carved Serpentine stone pieces by Peter Rujuwa, and even a glass piece by Kathleen Kitch are now on exhibit interspersed with African animals to provide a safari search.
