You'll Never Believe How Much Work Goes Into Making A Kitchen Knife

It's so much work.

If you've ever wondered why kitchen knives cost so much, this video is your answer. Ben Edmonds of Blok Knives walks us through the process that goes into creating one of his kitchen knives -- which, by the way, run for roughly $380 -- and it is downright enlightening (and beautiful).

Edmonds worked for over a decade as a graphic designer and decided to give up the office life for a more hands-on craft. The work doesn't necessarily come easy. Edmonds explains that you could put three to four hours into a knife only to realize you've misjudged the balance of the blade and have to start all over. And that's just for the blade -- carving out the wooden handle presents its own set of challenges, too.

Of course not all kitchen knives are priced as high as one from Blok Knives, but they don't all look as pretty either (or cut quite as smoothly). Check out the Blok Knives site, and watch the video above for a look at how hand-made knives are crafted.
