When ABC asked viewers to save "Happy Endings" in a promo that aired shortly after the show's new Friday evening time slot was announced, fans were a little confused.
If the network wanted to save "Happy Endings" so badly, why had it sent it off into the void of Friday night?
But "Happy Endings" showrunners Jonathan Groff and David Caspe are in agreement that the "Save Happy Endings" promo, strange as it was, did nothing but good for the series.
"I think it was fun," Groff told THR. "And it got more press attention than any promo for the show I've ever seen. Once it got picked up, obviously people commented on the oddness of it, but in the world of trying to break through the clutter, it got people to know that we were coming back on."
“You got to hand it to them,” Caspe told TVLine. “That’s the most press that a promo has ever gotten that I’ve seen in my lifetime ... It’s quite effective. It might seem a little odd, but it’s kind of working.”
But is the network really rooting for "Happy Endings" as much as they claim to be? Caspe thinks so.
“ABC truly loves the show and they tell us that all the time, and I completely believe them,” he maintains. However, television is a business, so “they have a lot of things to consider.” Still, he pointed out to TVLine that “they obviously could have just canceled us and they haven’t. So I think it’s a testament that they’re trying to figure out a way to make it work.”
