Harry Jackson, Conservative Maryland Bishop, Slams Gay Marriage As 'An Assault' On Society

Bishop Harry Jackson: Gay Marriage Is 'An Assault' On Society

Bishop Harry Jackson, a right-wing advocate and established anti-gay crusader, vowed this week to lead the fight against marriage equality in Maryland during a surprise appearance.

Jackson, a longtime favorite of conservative religious groups including the Family Research Council (FRC), appeared at "A Gathering of Eagles," hosted by conservative "apostle" Cindy Jacobs, founder of Generals International, which aims to achieve "societal transformation through intercession and the prophetic," according to its website.

In his impassioned speech to the congregation, Jackson slammed the legalization of same-sex marriage as “an assault," before noting, “The Enemy wants [marriage equality] to be a legacy, or a seed that is planted in this generation that corrupts, perverts and pollutes...generations to come."

Jackson's speech comes on the heels of a TownHall.com op-ed piece titled "The Marriage Meltdown," in which he likened the possible legalization of same-sex marriage in his state to Kim Kardashian's failed union. "Unfortunately, celebrities are not the only folks whose marriages are caving in under the cultural pressures of our generation,” Jackson wrote. "Gays and lesbians are legally free to live as they please; they just should not be allowed to redefine marriage for the rest of us."

He went on to note, "Lastly, we are fools if we think that redefining marriage to include homosexual couples is the end of the story...Groups advocating polygamy and polyamory have their arguments prepared and will begin advocating for the definition of marriage to be relaxed further to accommodate their preferences."
