Hasidic Judaism embraces joy and spirituality, yearning and learning, powerful singing, but most individuals in these communities do not own a television set or attend secular shows. Now that Fiddler on the Roof is having its revival on Broadway to much critical acclaim, Jew in the City, started by Allison Josephs, decided to see what it would be like to show Hasidic Jews the classsic 1971 film starring Chaim Topol and Norma Crane.

The reactions of these first time Fiddler viewers are charming and 100 percent authentic. This viral video educates as it entertains which is the goal of Jew in the City, an organization that uses social media and humor to break Jewish stereotypes. Among the Hasidic Jews in the video is Abe Karpen, who starred alongside Natalie Portman in New York, I Love You. (2008). You may be able to grasp how he landed a role in a film, but his lesser known Hasidic peers bring just as much enthusiasm and hilarity to the viewing party.

Enjoy and L'Chaim!
