Landlord Sued For 'Haunted House' By New Jersey Tenants Josue Chinchilla, Michele Callan

Couple Sues Landlord For Haunted Home

Adjusting to new circumstances is always a little unnerving, but it gets a whole lot scarier when there are ghosts involved.

Josue Chinchilla, his fiancé, Michele Callan, and Callan's two children moved into a rental home in Toms River, New Jersey on March 1, according to ABC. They hadn't been there one night when they began sensing that they weren't the only inhabitants.

The family started hearing bizarre sounds and seeing flickering lights, and even recorded mysterious voices saying, "Let it burn," Chinchilla told ABC.

What happened on the night of March 10 was the last straw. On that evening, Chinchilla told the Asbury Park Press, blankets started inexplicably sliding off his bed, and he felt an invisible grip on his arm. Callan added that she saw a "shapeless dark apparition" lurking nearby.

Fed up with these spectral shenanigans, the family checked into a hotel on March 13, where they have been staying ever since. Chinchilla and Callan are now suing their landlord for their $2,250 security deposit. They say "their lives would be in mortal danger" if they continued to live there, according to USA Today.

Landlord Richard Lopez is unconvinced. He believes the the couple is really just frightened of having to pay the rent, according to the ABA Journal. Lopez is now countersuing the couple for breaking their lease.

The couple has a slew of paranormal pundits backing up their claims.

The Shore Paranormal Research Society has made their investigation video of the home public. The Society classifies the activity as "paranormal," clarifying that this does not indicate "an actual haunting."

Marianne Brigando, of NJ Paranormal Investigators , disagrees. She told the Asbury Park Press that the house is "the site of an active or intelligent haunting." Brigando's investigation involved communicating with the alleged otherworldly presence via a flashlight. When Brigando asked questions, she claims, an unseen force would turn the flashlight on and off--two flashes for "yes," one for "no."

To top it off, the couple's pastor, Terence Sullivan, is certain a "demonic possession" has visited the house, reports USA Today.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story said Callan has daughters. She actually has a son and a daughter. We regret the error.
