Pretty beaches in Hawaii are a dime a dozen. But if you're as serious as we are about finding the perfect seaside experience, then the crowded Waikiki and Lanikai beaches, as gorgeous as they are, just won't cut it.

While crowds flock to the most convenient, well-known beaches, some of the Aloha State's best gems can only be accessed by rugged adventure or are nestled in a quaint neighborhood just waiting to be discovered.

So, where do you find these secret pockets of paradise? It's easy: When in Hawaii, do as the locals do. We consulted our Hawaii office to find out where the kamaaina go to get some beachside R and R.

Waipio Beach on the Big Island

To get to this secluded black sand beach, you have hike down a very steep road that leads into Waipio Valley, but the trek is well worth it.
Shipman Beach on the Big Island

It takes an hour-long hike through forest and lava rock to get to Shipman Beach (also known as Ha'ena Beach), where you'll find a quiet, perfect bay.
Secret Beach on Kauai

If you need directions to find the hiking trail that leads to this hike, Yelpers suggest to "ask a local how to get to 'secrets' and they'll give you directions!" But be warned, there is an unofficial nudist area of the beach.
Kekaha Beach Park on Kauai

You can find this beach off the highway on Kauai's west side and, on especially clear days, you can see the Forbidden Island in the distance.

You'll need a four-wheel drive vehicle to access this quiet sandy beach, but once you get there, chances are you'll be the only one!
Changs Beach on Maui

You might think it's impossible to find a beach that feels secluded on the heavily populated island of Oahu, but if you drive down to the west side, Makua Beach will prove you wrong.
