Kyle Warren saw something a little out of the ordinary when he looked out his window today. Not cabs rolling by on a cloudy day, not construction workers beginning a shift, no. A hawk devouring a breakfast of torn pigeon? Yes.

Now that everyone has phones with cameras, the new trend of documenting NYC hawks eating birds has become a viral sensation. Case in point:

But we wondered if it was normal for hawks to prey on the city's mascot, the pigeon. John Rowden of the NYC Audobon Society describes hawks eating pigeons as "an everyday occurrence, probably happens multiple times a day" -- predominately red-tailed hawks in the city. Pigeons are a "major prey item," and that hawks take advantage of the city's overabundance of pigeons and rats. In other words -- isn't it about time you thanked a hawk?
