Heidi Heitkamp Mocks GOP Rival Rick Berg With His Catch Phrase

Heidi Heitkamp Turns 'North Dakota Way' Against Rival

Heidi Heitkamp, North Dakota's Democratic Senate candidate, is turning her opponent's "North Dakota Way" catch phrase against him with a new website that highlights the use of the phrase to allege hypocrisy.

The Heitkamp campaign is launching the website targeting Rep. Rick Berg (R) on Monday, just before Tuesday's GOP primary, which the congressman is expected to win easily. Berg will then face an unexpectedly tough race in a GOP-leaning state. Heitkamp and Berg were found to be in a dead heat in a recent poll, with the former state attorney general barely edging Berg 47 to 46 percent.

Heitkamp's team has compiled dozens of occasions, including TV ads, in which Berg used "North Dakota Way" as a shorthand to describe what kind of senator he would be. Heitkamp, however, argues that Berg's way and North Dakota's are very different, so the site offers up a litany of contrasts, such as Berg expressing support for rural hospitals while voting for legislation that would cut federal cash for rural hospitals.
