Hempstead Reading List: 'The Great Gypsy' Included In Misspelled Selection Of Titles

'The Great Gypsy'?!

Summer reading lists are a common thing for schools - but usually the books on the list actually exist.

A list produced by a Long Island school district contains so many errors that it would almost be funny if it weren't for how terrible some of them are.

The Hempstead Public Schools Summer Reading List, embedded below, contains more than 30 errors, according to New York magazine. Some are pretty obvious - the author of Wuthering Heights is listed as "Emily Bonte" (and Charlotte Brontë similarly loses her "r") while Animal Farm's creator is "George Ornell." The Canterbury Tales becomes singular, The Scarlet Letter is now "The Scarlett Letter," but our favorite has to be The Great Gatsby, here listed as an improbable spinoff, "The Great Gypsy."

"Those who read more, achieve more" it says at the top of the list. Spelling and punctuation aside, the list is actually pretty good - but we'd suggest that the author have another try at writing as clearly as they read.

In a statement provided to News 12 Long Island, Roger Tilles, a member of the New York State Department of Education’s Board of Regents, said, "It indicates again that a stable administration is absolutely essential for kids to get the kind of education they need. Hempstead has not had a stable administration for a long time and the kids are suffering."
