After a campaign season marred by unrelenting misogyny, Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton to become this country’s president-elect, and many women are reeling. We’re grieving. We’re taking stock of how we got here. We’re getting IUDs. As Clinton said in her concession speech on Wednesday, these results are painful for a lot of people, and they will be for a long time.
Mercifully, this country has long had organizations that fight, every day, to empower women and keep them safe. And while it is, of course, OK to simply be still and feel whatever it is you’re feeling, there are things you can do right now if you feel like you’re crawling out of your skin. Perhaps consider this list (by no means exhaustive) of pro-women, pro-girls groups that can always use support:
American Civil Liberties Union fights to support reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, racial justice, voting rights and free speech (to name a few). Take action. Make a gift.
Black Women’s Blueprint fights sexual violence against black women and girls. Donate here.
Boys & Girls Clubs of America helps provide a safe place for boys and girls to learn and play through programs aimed at fostering leadership, health, the arts, etc. Here are a few ways to give.
Center for Reproductive Rights works to improve the worldwide reproductive rights landscape using the law. Report a rights violation, call on Congress to support women or donate. National Organization for Women, the feminist advocacy group, has been fighting for the women’s rights movement since the 1960s, promoting reproductive rights and an end gender-based inequality. Donate here.
National Women’s Law Center works to create policies and laws that support girls and women ― particularly those who are low-income and have been discriminated against. Take action. Donate.
Planned Parenthood provides healthcare to 1.5 million women and men every year in this country (despite being under constant threat by the GOP). Donate. Get involved here.
