In 2015, there were an estimated 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean, weighing approximately 269,000 tons. Similarly, some four billion plastic microfibers per square kilometer litter the deep sea. Those staggering numbers pose a massive problem that could contaminate the world’s water ecosystems. They’re so massive that scientists are having trouble even gauging the impact.

What can we do about it? Well, for starters check out Rob Greenfield’s new video. Rob’s a social activist who caught up with Eric Dieters, a man who’s skimming trash from San Diego’s bay area. While it’s just one part of the solution, the trash skimmer boat could be revolutionary in the way cities approach garbage pickup.

You can do small things in your everyday life, too. Ditch bottled water and opt for reusable water bottles, use reusable shopping bags, say no to single use plastics, and buy unpackaged food. Although we need more efforts like Eric’s, these small actions will make the sustainable difference for our oceans.
