Viewers got a special peek inside America’s favorite home this weekend during HGTV’s “White House Christmas 2012” special.
First Lady Michelle Obama sat down with designer Genevieve Gorder to discuss the “Joy to All” theme for the house and the whole decorating process. "I think next to the North Pole, this is probably one of the most magical places," said Mrs. Obama. "The house comes alive in so many ways and with so many volunteers, and such excellent staff, the transformation happens literally overnight."
It all starts when the Obamas receive the official holiday tree, which is displayed in the Blue Room. This year, the Fraser fir measured an impressive 18 feet, six inches -- but it's only one of 54 greens that will grace the halls of the home.
Once the trees are in place, volunteers are on hand to decorate everything from the front doors on the house to the entrance way. There’s even a life-sized Bo topiary made from 20,000 pom poms. And we can't forget the 300 pound ginger bread home that has been a White House tradition since the 1960s.
But of course, the main attraction is the official tree which is dedicated to the troops, veterans and military families. It is trimmed with ornaments made by military-base children from around the United States.
Besides for the over-the-top decor, the First Lady includes small details like handcrafted snow globes and pomegranate decorations. And of course, she loves the Red Room where festive fruits and berries are displayed to honor her commitment to healthy living.
