High Fiber Diet: Healthy, But Why?

We all know that we're supposed to eat more fiber. It's one of the central, undisputed tenants of a healthy diet that has been drilled into our heads along with suggestions like drinking more water, eating less meat and choosing fresh veggies.

The USDA's Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that adults eat 14 grams of fiber for every 1,000 calories they consume -- roughly 25 grams for the typical woman and 38 grams for the typical man. But most Americans eat far less than that -- only about 15 grams of fiber each day.
