High Line Extension: CSX Donates Third And Final Section Of Elevated Railroad To New York City (IMAGES)

The High Line received its third and final section on Tuesday thanks to a donation from CSX Transportation, the company that had previously donated the High Line's structures below West 30th Street.

The third section will reportedly wrap around the Hudson Rail Yards between West 30th and 34th Streets.

The transfer of ownership of the final section of the High Line marks a monumental step toward our goal of opening the entire elevated railway to the public...Transforming the final section of the elevated railway into public space will complete the vision – something that seemed all but impossible just over ten years ago.

Construction is expected to begin later this year. In March, initial designs for the final section were unveiled and presented at a community meeting.

Officials say construction is estimated to cost $90 million with a full public opening slated for spring of 2014.
