Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward was selected to serve on President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in 2010. In the video below, Ward talks about his tough childhood and why he got involved in the Advisory Commission.

"Black kids didn't want to hang out with me because I was Korean," he explained. "Korean kids didn't want to hang out with me because I was black. White kids didn't want to hang out with me because I was black and Korean."

Ward went on to say that he looked to sports and "used all of that negative energy" to turn it into a positive.

He joined 17 others to serve on the White House's Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Scroll down to watch Ward's speech.
