10 Last Names That May Dethrone Smith

The Hispanic population in the United States keeps growing and with it the Latino influence on American culture. From salsa become the top-selling condiment (sorry ketchup), to non-Hispanics naming their children Maria, Miguel and Ernesto, there's no question the country is changing.

This shouldn't come as a surprise, given that Mexico is the only country in the world with a larger Hispanic population than the United States. Since the Latino population has topped 50 million, and counting, here are 10 last names that non-Hispanics better get used to.

It makes sense that the top 10 list of U.S. Hispanic surnames is almost identical to Mexico's, according to El Imparcial. Mexicans form the largest group of U.S. Latinos, with 65 percent of the Hispanic population being of Mexican descent.

The main difference was "Flores" missing from the American list, with "Torres" replacing it.

And, of course, advertisers have already caught on to this growing list. In one Bank of America commercial the "Garcia Family" is seen happily going camping. This shows how marketers are trying to attract Hispanic consumers, the largest ethnic minority in the U.S.
