It was a heartbreaking episode of "Hoarding: Buried Alive" (Sun., 9 p.m. ET on TLC) as 51-year old Elvis impersonator Cary was the sole story of the hour. Once a physical education teacher, Cary's life has spiraled almost completely out of control as a result of his severe anxiety and depression.
Making matters worse, as evidenced throughout the hour, is that his friends have absolutely no idea how to be supportive in the way that Cary needs. They may be coming from a place of love, but their "tough love" approach of yelling at him and giving him ultimatums created more stress and tension than was probably necessary.
While he was able to make progress in the cleaning of his apartment, it was done under the fear that his friends would leave him if he didn't agree to part with a lot of his stuff. So while the physical work was done, there was concern it might have done even more psychological damage.
In a talk with The Fix a few months after filming, Cary said that things have improved around the house, "But I'm not cured yet."
